While the federal government is striving to implement the latest technological advancements across sectors, there are technologies (some already here, some on the horizon) that government needs to make a big shift towards in order to provide the innovation our country craves. So, what are these emerging government technologies that are sure to change the game? This blog discusses two rising tech trends that are changing not only workflows and procedures, but jobs as well. Let’s get into it!

Artificial Intelligence
While AI has already arrived in government, it is predicted that this government technology is one that is said to make a big splash in the coming decade. In this day in age, citizens expect a top-tier experience in many aspects of their lives. To provide this, governments need to implement AI across healthcare, financial services, etc. so citizens have access to information with the click of a button.

“From building permits to financial assistance and health care, citizens will interact with AI-based virtual agents to get their queries answered. Over the next 10 years, as AI technology evolves, chatbots will become smarter, leaving government workers to solve complex tasks that require human interaction or creativity.†(Patton, 2020).

AI has the ability to provide information faster, while also shifting federal job responsibilities towards more important tasks. Although some are worried that AI might take over the workforce, others are optimistic that this will enhance the types of jobs offered through the government.

Smart Systems & Data
Although the federal government already utilizes data in its decision making to some degree, it is not nearly enough. By investing in smart systems, the government then has the ability to paint a more accurate picture about citizens instead of making the many assumptions that are currently being made.

Not only that, but this government technology allows for increased energy saving and reduced nitrogen oxide emissions. For example, smart airports are on the rise, as Wi-Fi access points are utilized to determine where travelers are and how long they are in specific areas around the airport. With this data, airports are able to turn off appliances in areas of an airport that are not being used.

Additionally, IoT allows airlines to monitor auxiliary power units (APU) on the tarmac, meaning they have the ability to turn off the APU’s if running beyond the necessary timeframe. This improves air quality by limiting the amount of nitrogen oxide emissions released.

With the power of AI and smart systems, our federal government, and the society we live in are sure to make a massive transformation.
